Development
is absolute, inevitable and universal. It has three dimensions – people
centered development, global development and sustainable development. To
achieve this, there should be information-sharing about development agenda
and planned actions. This communication can be in the form of dissemination,
guidelines, recommendations, sensitization, advocacy, education,
conversation, fundraising or counselling. Development communication links
planners, beneficiaries and implementers of development action. It is
achieved through the media or other communication networks, by circulating
knowledge that will inform people of significant events, opportunities,
dangers, and changes in their community. It teaches ideas, skills and
attitudes that people need to achieve for a better life. The media can
inspire people for better life, as it endows a person with the capacity to
imagine about a new developed situation. Besides this, the communication
channels help the diffusion of innovative ideas to the people. In short,
development communication helps people to be informed, persuaded and
educated. It also ensures the grassroots participation and communication in
the development process.
Keeping
this concept in mind, the Department of Development Communication (DDC)
sensitizes the people to the countless developmental concerns through
development support communication. At present, the department publishes a
quarterly magazine, XIVANI, a student magazine The Catalyst
and a quarterly journal, Vikas Vani Journal. XID Publications, a new
initiative of the Institute publishes at least two scholarly books a year on
development-related themes. The department is in the process of making
documentaries, posters, etc., based on various development issues. It also
offers training programmes in the areas of health communication, watershed
communication, and sanitation communication, etc., to the grassroots level
people. Apart from development communication, it also offers training
programmes on social communication and information technology.
